Process

I started working on this process in a class on visual music. I was heavily inspired by the animation of Drew Tyndell and took to reverse engineering his process in a way that could significantly speed up creating the animation and be quickly reproduced.

I took several high-resolution scans of blocks pastel lines I drew on printer paper, although I essentially ended up only using one of these for the majority of the projects.

I created a composition of shape layers arranged in different ways to create 3D illusions, looking at the work of Victor Vaserelly for inspiration, and added some “roughen edges” to the shapes to make them appear more hand made drawn in the end state. Using “tint” I adjusted the pastels to match the colors of the composition.

The end products are created by looping the scans, moving the looping scans in different ways using the shape layers as mattes, moving and looping the bezier handles for certain shape layers.
