Music: Deerhunter - Operation

Concept

The assignment I was given for this was to create a piece that conveys 10 emotion words through graphic elements.

Mental and physical health are inextricably linked. This piece that explores this link through several vignettes of surreal, grotesque, body and hospital-related imagery. The music for this piece is “Operation” by Deerhunter. Deerhunter is the project of Bradford Cox, who was born with a rare genetic disorder, Marfan Syndrome, and spent much of his childhood in the hospital. This song captures the psychological trauma of this experience.

BRUSHWORK PROCESS

A lot of transitions and assets in this were created with this process I worked out:

1. Create a photoshop action of a black brush stroke on white background (make sure “Allow Tool Recording” is enabled)

2. Take a hi-res screen recording using Quicktime Player (On Mac)

3. Import Screen Recording into After Effects and use a Luma Inverted Matte to isolate the stroke

4. Alpha mattes galore

My original ideas definitely centered around creatures and I struggled with composition and other elements for a while.
